Following the growth in solar and wind power generation, battery storage at grid scale is entering the mass adoption phase. New large scale projects in California, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Vermont highlight the real world applications.

LG Energy Solution Vertech plans to build 10 grid-scale battery storage facilities with a total energy storage capacity of 10 gigawatt hours in the United States this year, which is roughly equivalent to the load capacity of 10 midsized coal plants.

In New Mexico, a new $850 million project is generating over 300 megawatts, enough to power 110,000 homes. The utility company PNM said they hope to be carbon-free by 2040. “As we stand today, PNM is more than halfway there at over 60% carbon-free with our energy resources,” said Carlos Lucero with PNM.
