In my 25 years as a sustainability professional, I have seen a lot of terminology come and go depending on the latest trends and concepts shared by thought leaders. Much of that terminology has either been too difficult to understand, or it has been too vague to convey any definite meaning (like "sustainability").
That is why I really like the terms "decarbonize" and "decarbonization". As defined by Webster, "decarbonize" means:
- to remove carbon from (something)
- to reduce the levels of carbon emissions (such as carbon dioxide) caused by or involved in (something, such as a facility, process, or organization)
Pretty simple and straight forward to me! Those terms can quickly convey meaning and intent to practically anyone. Importantly, "decarbonize" and "decarbonization" are verbs with inherent action built right in, so when those terms are used, we're already talking about how we can do something rather than getting caught up in semantics.
If you want to get in the action, check out some of our latest decarbonization related jobs below, Staff Picks.

I continue to research, curate, and expand the number of companies on the list. These established companies and startups are doing truly amazing things related to solar, wind, hydrogen, energy storage, geothermal, carbon capture, low carbon materials, transportation and many others. Let me know if you have companies you would like to see added!
